If my old papa, god rest his soul
Where alive a would be happy to know him

If he could tell me why he left a child
Six years old on the back porch tiles

I would be ready to be loved
I would be ready to be loved and give anyone love

And if my mama, dear mama cried
If she had tears for him the day that he died

I would be ready…

If my soul where sparks of gold
And not so cold

I would be ready…

If my old papa, god rest his soul
Where alive I would be happy to know him

I’d make him proud to have a son like me
I’d make him proud and then I’d let him be

I would be ready…

I would not ask for much, not for money
And not that he should be that strong
If I could ask him a question I just would want to know what went wrong
